I bought this at the same time as I bought the Defender metal seed feeder. It was bigger than expected - larger than a dinner plate. I already had feeders, one containing sunflower hearts and one containing wild bird seed, hanging from a bird feeding station on my patio. However, I was really fed up with the mess made by falling seeds and husks. Some of this was eaten by the birds but a lot was not and needed to be swept up regularly. Apart from the sweeping up, I found that the fallen seeds badly stained the paving slabs and even a pressure washer didn't remove the stains. I decided that I needed to find a way of catching the fallen seeds and had a look online to see what was available. This tray seemed like a good idea and so it has proved. I have been using it for about a week now with sunflower hearts and it is working well. Not much at all is falling onto the patio. The seeds that fall into the tray are being eaten by birds and there is sufficient room for birds to be eating from the feeder and from the tray. The husks are being left in the tray and these do build up quite quickly so you do have to empty the tray every couple of days, otherwise the tray is likely to overflow which would obviously defeat the object of having it in the first place. The tray fits onto the feeder quite easily and you can attach it to a pole in the garden, rather than hanging it up, if that is what you prefer. I haven't yet removed the tray from the feeder - I simply shake the husks out to empty it. Some reviewers say that it is quite awkward to remove the tray for cleaning but I have still to attempt this. I would mention that the tray is made of plastic and I don't yet know how sturdy it will prove to be, only time will tell. At the moment I am pleased with it and if it proves fairly hard-wearing I intend to buy another for the wild bird seed.
